Young Friends of Film

Young Friends of Film (YFF) is a membership program for 21-40 year-old film buffs, who have not had the opportunity to view classic films as they were meant to be seen-on the big screen. In addition to all the benefits of regular Film Society membership, YFF members receive six special screenings per year with noteworthy guest speakers followed by great parties (see schedule below). Additional YFF benefits include one pair of complimentary tickets per month to select Walter Reade Theater series and invitations to preview screenings of new films before they are released in theaters.

Ariel
New York Film Festival, 1988
Running Time: 74 minutes
Thursday, October 20: 7:30 pm
Ticket price: $25

If you enjoyed Aki Kaurismaki’s recent “The Man Without a Past,” this early film offers more deadpan comic pleasures. The film follows a mine worker (Turo Pajala) who loses his job and sets out on an unconventional cross-country odyssey, Finnish-style. Longtime Kaurismaki leading man, the late Matti Pellonpää is also featured. “Ariel” premiered at the 1988 New York Film Festival, like countless other Kaurismaki films.  If you are new to his films, just picture a Jim Jarmusch comedy of outcasts and slackers—set in Finland. Don’t miss the chance to see this rarely screened print!

The screening will be introduced by film critic AMY TAUBIN. As always, an open-bar, catered reception will follow the screening, with live music by the fabulous HAAS VAZ JAZZ DUO. Complimentary Perugina chocolates will be provided to ticket-buyers at the party (quantities may be limited), courtesy of Nestle. There will also be a free raffle drawing for an “Ariel” poster and DVD copies of Marlene Dietrich’s classic “The Blue Angel,” courtesy of Kino International.
