Young Friends of Film: The Ice Storm
Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Admission (includes screening & reception): $25
Young Friends of Film members receive one complimentary ticket.

“[the] emotional climax of the film, with its warring glints of despair and hope, typifies the stunning achievement of The Ice Storm and confirms Lee as a director of the first rank… Like all great films, this one takes a piece out of you.” ~ Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Ice Storm novelist Rick Moody will introduce the film and we'll raffle off five signed copies of his novel. As always, there will be a post-screening party with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres.

The Ice Storm
Ang Lee, US, 1997; 113m

With bad weather approaching and Watergate unfolding in the background, two families gather for Thanksgiving in the plush suburb of New Canaan, Connecticut. A volatile mixture of adultery, sexual experimentation, drug use and petty crime will make the rooms inside as treacherous as the ice-covered roads outside. Based on Rick Moody's acclaimed novel, James Schamus’ keenly astute screenplay, a prizewinner at Cannes, is a funny, acerbic, and moving hymn to a dazed and confused era of American life. Ang Lee’s deft direction ignites the talents of an exceptional ensemble cast that includes Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Elijah Wood and Christina Ricci. The film opened the 1997 New York Film Festival and is just as powerful today as it was then.

Please note: We regret to announce that due to a schedule conflict Sigourney Weaver will not be able to join us to talk about the film.
