The Thirteen / Trinadtsat Series: Envisioning Russia: A Century of Filmmaking [Jan 25 - Feb 14 2008] Director: Mikhail Romm, Country: USSR, Release: 1936, Runtime: 87 Hollywood had westerns, Mosfilm had easterns: films set in the harsh, desert-like wilds of Central Asia, where the uncompromising terrain offers myriad possibilities for tales of physical action and stark, moral choices. Inspired by John Ford’s The Lost Patrol, Romm’s The Thirteen is an excellent example of the genre. A group of ten Soviet soldiers, their commander, his wife and an old geologist trek home across the Siberian desert. They are set upon by a horde of armed bandits, led by the ruthless Shirmathan. Vastly outnumbered, the thirteen resolve to hold out, using their wiles and sheer courage to survive until help can arrive. Romm is careful not to glorify any single member of the group; there’s a strong sense of the collective hero, the fate of one being determined by the fate of all.
