The Other One / La Otra Series: Wounded Pride, Simmering Passion: Roberto Gavaldón [Aug 22 - 28, 2008] Director: Roberto Gavaldón, Country: Mexico, Release: 1946, Runtime: 104 After a successful career in Hollywood, Dolores del Río returned to her native Mexico in the early ’40s and soon after scored an international hit with Emilio Fernandez’s Maria Candelaria. She went on to work on a number of high-profile Mexican productions, including this fascinating film noir from Roberto Gavaldón. A poor manicurist, María (del Río), has a twin sister, Magdalena (del Río), who has just been widowed by a millionaire. On Christmas Eve, María claims to be depressed and on the verge of suicide, luring Magdalena to her room to kill her. María returns to the world as Magdalena. Yet as she steps into her new identity, she discovers aspects of her sister’s life she could have scarcely imagined. José Revueltas’s screenplay won an Ariel in 1947, while the moody, expressive chiaroscuro photography is by Alex Phillips, one of Mexico’s top cinematographers and one of Gavaldón’s most frequent collaborators.
