La Barraca

Director: Roberto Gavaldón, Country: Mexico, Release: 1945, Runtime: 103

After over almost two decades working as everything from a bit player to a props manager to an assistant director, Roberto Gavaldón graduated to directing his own feature films with this powerful adaptation of the novel by Spaniard Vicente Blasco Ibañez.

La Barraca almost counts as a Spanish exile production, as so many members of the cast and crew were refugees from the Civil War. Set in Valencia, the story begins as the Barret family, crushed by debt, abandons their house (la barraca). Months later, a migrant family, the Baptistes, moves in and arouses the hostility of the Barrets’ former friends and neighbors. An atmosphere rife with suspicions, rumors and jealousies—beautifully captured by Gavaldón—makes it impossible for people who might otherwise help each other recognize how much they have in common.

La Barraca was a tremendous success, winning ten Ariels (the Mexican Oscar) at the inaugural awards, including best picture, cinematography, screenplay, actor (Domingo Soler), and director—Gavaldón’s first of many awards.
