Problem Child: A Cinematic Display of Bad Behavior November 28 – 30, 2008 “SUPERFUN! This 11-film showcase explores the use of children and young adults as a serious component of mainstream cinema. Filmmakers and studios have often embraced material that puts kids front and center, with the knowledge that the final product has frequently been a huge moneymaker. With children ranging in age from five to 18—in subjects portraying them as demons, victims, criminals, the abused, abusers, and objects of unknown scientific potential—this broad selection of marvelous and fascinating films explores the rather dark strain of bizarre human behavior attributed to kids on screen, as picked up by a stunning level of cinematic talent: directors Robert Mulligan, William Wyler, Jack Clayton, William Friedkin, Richard Fleischer, and Brian De Palma; actors Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas, Orson Welles, Faye Dunaway, Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, Ellen Burstyn, Deborah Kerr and Amy Irving; and writers Maxwell Anderson, Lillian Hellman, William Peter Blatty and Truman Capote, to name just a few. There is something for everyone this Thanksgiving weekend during this entertaining and engrossing look at some of cinema’s most provocative youth-led works, all on the best prints available.
