The only one of Kim’s eight features made before The Housemaid to survive, Yangsan Province was a controversial work, largely attacked by the critics. It nevertheless proved popular with audiences and was credited with bringing many Koreans back to the cinema for the first time since the war.
Ok-ran has been promised in marriage to Su-dong since before she was born. As Ok-ran matures into a beautiful young woman, she attracts the attention of the son of a government official. After being married in secret, the newlyweds attempt to escape, but fate has other plans for the fugitive lovers. Already with this, his second film, Kim combines a highly theatrical style with a story of raw, almost primal emotions, explosive passion and––as in his later work––several surprise reversals.
Note: The print to be screened, the only version in existence, is missing a few brief scenes.
