Transgression, aka The Violation of Buddhist Commandments / Pa-gye
Series: Infernal Machines: The Films of Kim Ki-Young
Director: Kim Ki-young, Country: South Korea, Release: 1974, Runtime: 110

Korean cinema possesses a rich line of religious films, focusing on Buddhist, Christian or shamanistic experience. Transgression charts the growing rivalry in one Buddhist temple between the “latecomers,” those who joined the religious life as adults, and the “early ones,” those who were brought to the temple as young war orphans and have consequently lived their entire lives there. Early one Chim-hae is considered a top candidate to replace the ailing head abbot, but during a visit to the female-run Sowon Temple, Chim-hae meets a beautiful priestess and begins to feel emotions and stirrings he’s never experienced before. The part of the beautiful priestess was played by Im Ye-jin, better know for her work in Korean teen movies throughout the ‘70s.
