A remake — Kim’s second, in fact—of The Housemaid, Kim returns to the basic story structure of the original in order to push certain aspects even further. The housemaid, Myeong-ja, now becomes the center of the story. A subplot concerns efforts to marry her off, while she resists, preferring her relationship with the musician Dong-sik and his wife. While the house itself in the original film was typically middle-class for the era, the 1982 version is greatly intensified and exaggerated; the house is awash in stark, primary colors, and the introduction of the damp, threatening basement area implies a kind of rottenness at the core of the family.
