During the Japanese occupation of Korea, Heo (Kim Jeong-cheol), the son of a patriot, is sent to live with the Yoon family after his father’s death. Heo becomes a successful attorney, known for defending those charged with political crimes. When the Yoon family runs into financial difficulties, the father offers Heo his only daughter, Jung-sun, in marriage. But Jung-sun despises Heo, considering him far beneath her socially because of his humble roots.
Many admirers of Lee Kwang-su’s original novel Earth were outraged by the screen adaptation prepared by Kim Yong-jin for Kim Ki-young’s film. The film deliberately downplayed the novels’ chronicle of anti-Japanese struggles in favor of examining tensions among the Koreans themselves.
