The revolution’s in the driver’s seat... Fields of Fuel Green Screens Monday, July 28, 2008 at 6:30 pm Post-screening Q&A with environmental experts Brent Baker, Founder TriState BioDiesel; Danny Falcone, Vice-Chair of Policy for the BioFuels Industry Committee; James Gennaro, Chairman of the New York City Council’s Committee on Environmental Protection; and Steve Winkelman, Center for Clean Air Policy. Followed by a reception in the Furman Gallery. The price of gasoline is soaring. The American addiction to oil has not abated, and while we look for alternatives, U.S. standing in the world is sinking. Along comes Josh Tickell, an activist who went to film school for the express purpose of getting the word out about this energy crisis. Tickell’s documentary is a roadmap for the journey that lies ahead: Driven by his own (self-admitted) emotionally charged motives, he tracks the domination of the petrochemical industry in the U.S. and drives his own “veggie van” across the country to help kick start the biodiesel revolution. Watch big rigs fill up on biodiesel at a Texas truck stop. See a Brooklyn-based biodiesel company turn used fryer oil from restaurants into clean-burning fuel. And witness the Swedish public as they make their country petroleum-free by 2020. From the polluted bayous of Louisiana to corporate offices in Detroit and the bloodshed in the Middle East, Fields of Fuel paves the way for discussion on how to wean ourselves from our addiction to oil. With appearances by Larry David, Larry Hagman, Woody Harrelson, Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson, Julia Roberts, Neil Young and Richard Branson, among many others. Each screening includes a discussion and reception with artists and expert commentators, where we invite non-profit organizations and others to provide materials and raise awareness of the many positive actions we can all take. Green Screens is programmed by Sharon Bahus, Isa Cucinotta and Marian Masone. In addition to this series, the Film Society screens PSAs showcasing climate change, sustainability and other matters concerning the health of our planet and its inhabitants. We are one of the first movie theaters in the country to regularly screen such PSAs and we encourage other theaters to join us.
