4 Hands: Cecil Taylor & Yosuke Yamashita in Concert
Special Premiere Screening
Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Jazz legend Cecil Taylor in person at the 7:45pm screening!

Scene Photo Part shaman, part showman, pianist extraordinaire Cecil Taylor was one of the key figures (along with Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane) in the American musical revolution of the ‘60s. His technical virtuosity was only matched by the ceaseless invention of his playing. Seen and heard far too little in recent years, Taylor has been beautifully captured here performing in a dual concert with Japanese pianist Yosuke Yamashita by documentary filmmaker Yasuhiko Shirai.

In his inimitable style — sometimes feisty, sometimes playful — Taylor ruminates before Shirai’s camera on his music — not to be limited by the label “jazz” — and the art of giving concerts. But the heart of the film is the amazing performance given by Taylor and Yamashita; with sounds ranging from aggressively percussive to delicately lyrical, these two keyboard wizards engage in a far-reaching musical conversation, responding to each other’s playing in a thousand fascinating ways. A wonderful introduction to Cecil Taylor’s musical world, as well as a great record of an astonishing concert.
