Program 5: Canada On The Rocks
Series: Dance on Camera Festival 2008

Christopher House: Ahead of the Curve
Rosemary House, Canada, 2007; 48m
Both films in this Canadian double bill find inspiration in the spectacular, rocky, island environment of Newfoundland. Ahead of the Curve explores the work and the sources of inspiration of the popular Canadian choreographer Christopher House, the artistic director of Toronto Dance Theatre, which will perform at the Joyce Theater starting Jan. 29. “If you've ever wondered about the point of dance, the answer is here,” wrote John Doyle in The Globe and Mail (Toronto). Rosemary House, the choreographer’s sister and the director of the film, will appear in person for an introduction and Q&A.

Feel the Earth Move: The Gros Morne Project
Anne Troake, Canada, 2007; 51m
Montreal’s renowned Coleman Lemieux Dance Company descends on a small community in Newfoundland’s Gros Morne National Park with a team of Canada’s finest artists. In one short week they create a dance work that honors the land, the sea and the people of this unique and beautiful spot. Filmmaker Anne Troake (known for her prize-winning short Pretty Big Dig) turns the camera on the exchange between the locals and the visiting artists, capturing the serendipitous creative moments and the stunning work that is the end result. Director Anne Troake is expected.
