Program 10: Pierre Coulibeuf’s Cinematic Universes
Series: Dance on Camera Festival 2008
Director: Pierre Coulibeuf, Country: France, Runtime: 101

Pavillon noir
Pierre Coulibeuf, France, 2006; 24m
The films of Pierre Coulibeuf invent marginal language, criticize established forms and question ways of presentation to create contemporary artistic universes. Pavillon noir, a collaboration with the choreographer Anjelin Preljocaj, explores the relationship between choreography, architecture and cinema. It plays with reality, disrupts it and moves into a familiar yet strange territory where identity keeps shifting.

Balkan baroque
Pierre Coulibeuf, France, 1999; 63m
Balkan Baroque is not a documentary on Marina Abramovic, an artist best known for her unique installations. Nor is it a record of her performances. Instead, what Pierre Coulibeuf has accomplished is really a cinematic transmutation, an imaginative, provocative and autonomous fictional work that captures Marina Abramovic’ powerful persona –– feminist, ironic and sexy and consistently fascinating. In the end, this is Coulibeuf’s personal vision of the artist.

Le Démon du passage
Pierre Coulibeuf, France, 1995; 14m
Characters appear in landscapes, disappear and reappear, seemingly trying to make a connection with one another but always in transition, obsessed with existential dilemmas, seeking answers. Visually, the confrontation is always between a fixed image and a moving one. This short fiction, inspired by the photography of Jean-Luc Moulene, is as intriguing as an unsolved mystery.
