Special Advance Screening: City of Men Monday, January 7, 2008 at 7pm
Admission: $15 general public; $12 FSLC members & students
Following City of God, Fernando Meirelles’ award-winning look at the violent underworld of Rio’s favelas, Paulo Morelli’s companion piece City of Men captures the perspective of the ordinary people caught in the crossfire.
On the brink of their 18th birthdays, two boys realize that they must leave childhood behind and become men. Neither wants to go down the easy road they have seen so many other men take: the short, cheap life of drug gangsters. For Ace (Douglas Silva), that means taking responsibility of his all-too-young family. For Wallace (Darlan Cunha), it is time to track down the father he has never met. But nothing is simple or easy in the favela, as an uncovered secret threatens to destroy their once rock-solid friendship. With a compelling visual style and a gripping soundtrack, City of Men mirrors the pace of life in a world where you have to run just to keep up.
