Its heroine, played by rising star Carice van Houten, is a Jewish girl on the run, who joins the resistance movement and infiltrates Nazi headquarters by seducing a German officer (Sebastian Koch). All the familiar Verhoeven ingredients are here – sex, violence, intrigue, betrayal– but, above all Black Book demonstrates that he is a great classical storyteller.
