Clara Bow stars in two restored silent-era classics:
Helen’s Babies and Capital Punishment

Sunday, December 16
Golden Silents: Hollywood Cinema from the Library of Congress
Live piano accompaniment by Donald Sosin

Double Feature Admission (one ticket for both films): $20 for Film Society members and students; $25 for the public
Single Screening Admission (a separate ticket for each film)for $12 for Film Society members and students; $15 for the public

We celebrate silent film’s favorite flapper Clara Bow with this double bill of her early features, curated by the Library of Congress’ Christel Schmidt. In the program’s first film, Helen’s Babies, Bow joins Baby Peggy and Edward Everett Horton in a comedy about a bachelor who fancies himself an expert on children’s behavior. Bow then co-stars with George Hackathorne and Elliott Dexter in the recently restored melodrama Capital Punishment by James P. Hogan, as the girlfriend of a reformed criminal who becomes the pawn in a bet between to well-to-do friends: get an innocent man convicted of murder. Dubbed “ingenious entertainment” by New York Times critic Mordaunt Hall in 1925, the film did little to hide its politics: “Sordid,” said Variety, “out-and-out screen propaganda against the death [penalty].”

Author Peter Kobel will be present to sign copies of his new book Silent Movies: The Birth of Film and the Triumph of Movie Culture (Little, Brown & Co.), a lavish look the early years of cinema and the industry’s innovators.
