Wild Side (director’s cut)
Series: The Cinema of Donald Cammell [Feb 2 -11 2007]
Director: Donald Cammell (as Franklin Brauner), Country: United Kingdom, Release: 1995, Runtime: 110

Cammell’s last film, and perhaps the source of his greatest frustration. Wild Side is a lurid tale of treachery and double-crossing in the twin worlds of business and sexuality unbound. It had almost as behaviorally intense a shoot as Performance, and an even more fraught post-production. Financiers Nu Image took Cammell’s intense, shocking/hilarious/lyric film and extracted what basically amounted to a Zalman King knock-off, giving center stage to the erotic encounter between banker and/or high-class hooker Anne Heche and Joan Chen’s Virginia, the wife of a loose-cannon financier played (if that’s the correct word) by Christopher Walken.

Some of Cammell’s friends believe that his disappointment over the treatment of Wild Side was what drove him to suicide. Half a decade later, Mazzola and China Kong, Cammell’s wife and the co-author of the screenplay, created a definitive version from Cammell’s notes, reinstating the edgier takes that Nu Image had suppressed. Cammell’s temporally fractured cut is a wild ride, careening from tension to exhilaration to lyricism and back again, and fully living up to the furious exclamation made by Walken’s Bruno Buckingham: "I am out there! I'm where every man wants to be!" “An extraordinary piece of work,” wrote Mark Kermode in Sight and Sound, “distinguished by a hypnotically jazzy structural rhythm which unites – rather than isolates – the bizarre antics of its oddball cast.”
