The 2006 Leo Awards

Tributes to William Greaves and Adrienne Mancia

Thursday, November 16, 2006

7pm: Wine and cheese reception in the Frieda and Furman Gallery adjacent to the Walter Reade Theater's lobby.

8pm: The 2006 Leo Awards will be presented to Adrienne Mancia and William Greaves. During the evening's program, to highlight the contributions each awardee has made, a selection of rare short films chosen by Adrienne Mancia (including Duck Amuck by Chuck Jones, Life by Donald Ritchie and In Paris Parks by Shirley Clarke) will be screened along with William Greaves’ The First World Festival of Negro Arts (1966, 40 min).

Admission includes the reception and the awards presentation event.

Since 1988, International Film Seminars/The Flaherty has annually presented the Leo Awards to recognize excellence in the field of independent media. The Leo Awards are named in honor of Leo Dratfield (1918-1986), a pioneer of independent and nontheatrical film distribution. This year’s awardees are William Greaves and Adrienne Mancia. They represent major accomplishments in the advancement of American cinema, and their influence permeates the contemporary scene.

William Greaves began his career as a featured actor on Broadway and in motion pictures. His work behind the camera has earned him over 70 international film festival awards. In addition to other honors, he was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1980. From 1968 to 1970 he served as executive producer and co-host of the pioneering Emmy Award-winning series Black Journal. Greaves most recently produced and directed Symbiotaxiplasm: Take 2 1/2. He is now working on the development of a two-hour documentary special for public telelvision on the Harlem Renaissance.

Adrienne Mancia curated for The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) from 1964 to 1998. Many of her exhibitions reflected international film currents. She introduced the “New Cinema” movement from Europe and Latin America and inaugurated an annual showcase of international animated films from the Annecy and Zagreb Festival. Ms. Mancia was a co-founder of New Directors/New Films, the annual series presented in association with the Film Society of Lincoln Center. She programmed for the Flaherty Film Seminars for several years and currently sits on their programming committee. She is now Curator-at-Large for BAMcinematek.
