Contest, aka Orienteering /Concurs
Series: Shining Through a Long, Dark Night: Romanian Cinema, Then and Now [April 16-April 27]
Director: Dan Pita, Country: Romania, Release: 1982, Runtime: 104

The 1970s witnessed the emergence of filmmakers both well-versed in international film styles and dedicated to making the cinema a vibrant part of Romanian culture—in certain respects, the forerunner of today’s young directors. One of the leading figures of this new wave, Dan Pita, achieved his greatest domestic and international success with Contest. A group of office workers go off to enjoy a morale-building day of orienteering, a game in which groups compete to find their way out of a forest. Soon divisions spring up among the participants. Those with knowledge of the area are scoffed at, while the forest suddenly becomes increasingly ominous, a planned labyrinth designed to continually frustrate attempts at escape. Working with a first-rate ensemble of actors, Pita carefully calibrates the emotional tenor of the contest, slowly revealing the panic that sets in when the contestants realize they might truly be all on their own without a reliable map or guide.
