Ned Rorem: Word & Music Saturday, April 26, 5:15pm The Film Society and Juilliard present this definitive portrait of one of America's most revered writers and composers. Following the screening, Matthew Gurewitsch will discuss the film with Rorem and the directors. Ned Rorem, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and much-loved diarist known for his extraordinary candor and gift of social observation, has enjoyed one of the most remarkable and celebrated careers of any recent American artist. James Dowell and John Kolomvakis’s loving portrait of Rorem looks at the artist as he moves into his twilight years, the shadow of his own mortality reflected in the worsening illness of his longtime companion James Holmes, who died of AIDS during the film’s decade-long gestation. The film also shows Rorem’s restlessness, as he continues to work on new pieces (or new productions of his older ones) while inspiring a new generation of musicians and writers. Interviews and footage featuring Claire Bloom, Allen Ginsberg, John Corigliano, Paul Bowles and Edward Albee provide a rich background and perceptive commentary for understanding Rorem and the world he lived and created.
