Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier in The Defiant Ones

Highlights of Hirschfeld's Hollywood, Part Two
Feb 1 - 28
Exhibit in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at the Walter Reade Theater

From the first all-black major studio musical, Hallelujah to classics such as Cabin in the Sky; from the message pictures of midcentury such as The Defiant Ones to comedies of the 70s like Uptown Saturday Night, Hirschfeld captured many of the memorable moments in black film history.

The name Al Hirschfeld has been synonymous with the theater since his first theatrical drawing was published in December 1926. By then, he was a six-year veteran of movie studio art departments. "I lived in the movies," he says of his early years, and it was in films that he discovered his gift of caricature. This exhibition celebrates an artist whose works of serious graphic composition, informed by a distinctly modern aesthetic and leavened by wit have helped to define the way Main Street America, and eventually the world, looks at the movies.

The artwork in Highlights of Hirschfeld's Hollywood was selected from an exhibition circulated by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
