Amy Arbus: The Fourth Wall
April 1 – 30
When a performing actor leaves behind his lines, staging, sets and lighting, and steps beyond the “fourth wall,” the unexpected happens. For the past several years, Amy Arbus has been creating a series of riveting portraits of celebrated actors both on and off Broadway, including Liev Schreiber in Talk Radio, Ed Harris in Wrecks, Alan Cumming in Cabaret, Cherry Jones in Doubt, Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens, and Ethan Hawke and Martha Plimpton in The Coast of Utopia, which are now featured in her new book, The Fourth Wall (Welcome Books). Explore the question of identity in these remarkable works that capture both actor and fictional character with a surprising mixture of spectacle and art, formality and spontaneity, performance and reality.
The Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery is adjacent to the Walter Reade Theater. It is open daily 1:30 to 6:00 p.m.
A preview of the show is available at Anthropy Arts.
