Balanchine in Hollywood

The Balanchine centennial celebration spotlights Popular Balanchine, two
programs based on a three-year research project by the Balanchine Foundation
to document Balanchine's work on Broadway and in Hollywood. Although much
has been written about the creation of his ballets, this brief but important
phase of his career has been largely undocumented until now. Initiated by
dance historian Nancy Reynolds, the foundation's director of research, the
project was spearheaded by Claude Conyers, a prize-winning publisher and an
editor of scholarly works in the humanities and the arts. A team of
prominent dance historians and researchers dug into archives, obtained
access to the estates of composers, designers and producers, and interviewed
dancers who appeared in some of the shows. Please join us for this two-day
show-and-tell extravaganza on September 13th and 20th. Because it is
interesting
to track the Broadway shows and how they were transformed (or not) when they
reached the screen, it is recommended that you think of these Monday nights
as a unit. Tickets are available individually, or as a 2-day package.

BALANCHINE ON BROADWAY - SEP 13: 7
Claude Conyers, Balanchine Project director, will offer an overview of what
his team of researchers found, as well as cover the stage show
Louisiana
Purchase, which was eventually transformed to the screen as a vehicle for
Bob Hope. Lynn Garafola, best known for her books on Diaghilev’s Ballets
Russes, will discuss the 1936 production of On Your Toes. Dance historian
Sally R. Sommer will analyze Where’s Charley, and Thomas F. DeFrantz, who
teaches theater history at MIT, will cover three Broadway productions -
Babes in Arms, Cabin in the Sky and House of Flowers, through commentary and
rare slides. In many instances, film clips will accompany the presentations.
BALANCHINE IN HOLLYWOOD - SEP 20: 7
Beth Genné will act as host for BALANCHINE IN HOLLYWOOD. Genné, who has a
special interest in the Hollywood musical, teaches dance history and art
history at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. For the Popular
Balanchine project, she was the principal researcher on Balanchine’s
Hollywood work. Using film excerpts, she will show how Balanchine combined
classical and popular forms in his dance sequences and how easily he adapted
to the new medium of film and its special requirements. Among the films
covered will be The Goldwyn Follies, On Your Toes, I Love an Adventuress,
Star-Spangled Rhythm and Follow the Boys. Barbara D. Horgan, trustee for the
Balanchine Trust, will introduce the program.
The Balanchine program coordinator is Joanna Ney. Grateful thanks to the
Howard Gilman Foundation for the continous support of dance programs at the
Walter Reade Theater.
