Joseph Mealey, Michael Paradies Shoob, U.S., 80m

We're celebrating the opening of the 2004 Republican Convention with this tribute to the man behind the man in the Oval Office, Karl Rove. Working from Wayne Slater and James C. Moore's book, filmmakers Joseph Mealey and Michael Paradies Shoob take a good, long look at one of the two or three most powerful men in America. The filmmakers dig back into Rove's beginnings in the world of young Republicans (he started playing political hardball back in high school), and trace his ascendancy from local Texas politics to the White House. Along the way, they create a portrait of modern American politics in its purest form - a hopelessly image-driven process, open only to the well-funded, in which every position is vetted and sold like a new product. Rove is ruthless, articulate, even brilliant, and he knows his history. And on November 2nd, we'll see how well he knows it.
