FILM COMMENT and the Rémy Martin Tastemaker Series
present the first in a series of
"Cinematic Soirees."
MOVIE MOMENTS OUT OF TIME 1997: Six prominent film critics and an award winning filmmaker provide a sampling of unforgettable moments from the best movies of 1997, followed by questions and comments from the audience.
program notes and times
FILM COMMENT, the Film Society of Lincoln Center's bimonthly film magazine, and the Rémy Martin Tastemaker Series present a program of "Cinematic Soirees" --periodic evenings built around lively talk about the world of film. The first such evening, to be held in the Film Society's Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th Street), will take place Monday, December 15 at 6:30 PM and will celebrate FILM COMMENT's beloved annual feature "Moments Out of Time." Following the presentation, a reception, featuring Rémy Martin Sidecars and hors d'oeuvres, will take place in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery of the Walter Reade Theater. For more than a quarter century, FILM COMMENT editor Richard T. Jameson and contributing editor Kathleen Murphy have collected each year's most indelible, most beautiful, and sometimes most mysterious scenes, images, and moods, and woven them into a verbal tapestry for their readers. This year, anticipating "Moments" regular publication in the January-February issue, the editors will give a live-action preview complete with film clips (selections will include THE SWEET HEREAFTER, THE ICE STORM, BOOGIE NIGHTS, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and MOTHER AND SON (an International Film Circuit release)) and "special guest moments" by other friends of the magazine: Molly Haskell, author of the recently published Holding My Own in No Man's Land; Andrew Sarris, film critic of The New York Observer; Gavin Smith, contributing editor to FILM COMMENT; David Sterritt, film critic of The Christian Science Monitor; and James Toback, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of BUGSY and writer-director of the soon-to-be-released TWO GIRLS AND A GUY. In addition to commenting upon their selected scenes, the panel will trade observations -- and probably conflicting opinions --concerning the overall best and worst of the 1997 film year, hazard test runs at their Ten Best lists, speculate on where movies are headed, and invite the audience into the fray. Discussion will continue informally in the subsequent reception in the Walter Reade Theater's Furman Gallery.
To attend "Cinematic Soirees," which includes the presentation of "Movie
Moments Out of Time" and the reception, ticket holders must be at least 21
year old . Tickets are $10, $8 for Film Society Members and go on sale
