THUNDER ROAD
Arthur Ripley, 1958; 92 minutes
The first and choicest of the many car-chase films in which lawmen race after moonshine runners on twisting Southern backwoods. It has always been a drive-in favorite; since the late sixties, critics have been added to its large cult following. Robert Mitchum (who devised the story) is the best moonshine runner in Tennessee -- transporting the illegal liquor his father makes in his still. He's so successful that U.S. Treasury agent Gene Barry makes a concerted effort to stop him, consequently putting pressure on other moonshine runners. Meanwhile, big city mobster Jacques Aubuchon tries to horn in on the moonshine action by rubbing put Mitchum. With the Feds and the mob after him, Mitchum decides to make one last run. The picture has exciting scenes and offbeat touches by director Arthur Ripley. Also with: Keely Smith, Peter Breck, Trevor Bardette, Sandra Knight, Jim Mitchum and Mitch Ryan.
