The 12th Book Presentation and Screening of
NONE SHALL ESCAPE
Monday, January 27, 2003 at 6pm
Critic, historian and scholar Annette Insdorf's
Indelible Shadows: Film and
the Holocaust is the definitive book on cinematic representations of the
Holocaust. To celebrate the publication of a newly expanded and updated
version of the book, Ms. Insdorf will be joining us here for a book signing.
She will also introduce a screening of
NONE SHALL ESCAPE, a 1944 studio
film that is far less known than it deserves to be. Although it was shot in
1944, the story of a Nazi officer named Wilhelm Grimm (Alexander Knox) and
his terrifying career is told in a post-war flashback, as Grimm defends
himself before a Nuremburg-type tribunal.
NONE SHALL ESCAPE was the
American film debut of the late André de Toth, and he renders the unusually
frank action with great force and lucidity. Written by Lester Cole and
co-starring Marsha Hunt, both soon to be blacklisted. Beautifully shot by
the great Lee Garmes.
